Ground School

Everything we can see, and where we are in it

One more step out. On the last page every dot was a star. On this one every dot is a galaxy, and they are not scattered evenly: gravity has pulled them into threads and walls around enormous empty bubbles. Astronomers call it the cosmic web. Press the button and find the thread we live on.

Scroll or pinch to zoom, drag to pan.
The web is drawn to look like what redshift surveys (2dF, Sloan) actually see: threads, walls, and voids. The positions are illustrative; the named structures are placed about where they are.

Ground School is published open: take it, build it better.
